#11 Mendham Wins Barnburner vs Madison

MENDHAM— The Mendham Minutemen (4-4) came away with an unbelievable 14-13 win in overtime over Madison (3-4)  in a comeback fashion. Mendham had lost their last four games and they were looking to get a statement win at home.

Mendham scored the first goal of the game thanks to Grace Monahan, which was a rush to the net, but the defense for the Dodgers started to do their work. Gabrielle Mariani and Sarah Preston combined for six goals and at halftime, Madison, due to their great defensive work and speed game, enjoyed a 6-1 lead.

The Minutemen started to cut back at the lead; drawing of penalties and depositing set pieces. They also got quite efficient at gathering ground balls and for Madison turnovers. Monahan added another goal as well as, a four-goal performance from Sophia Cardella, and midway through the fourth quarter because of some insurance goals from the Dodgers, Madison had a three-goal lead but still had to fend off one last Mendham rush.

Freshman Shea Shoulberg started to really find her legs using her speed as a facilitator, as well as being able to bounce the ball low and find goals, including an equalizer with four minutes to play, tying the incredible contest at 13 a piece. In overtime, the young goalscorer took the ball from the left side of the net and slashed a one-timer home, to send the Minutemen fans into a frenzy. Shoulberg collected her first hat trick and her first overtime goal in a memorable game for Mendham.

“I saw them clear through for me, and the defender was a lefty, so I got my stick to the left hand, I just dodged and ended up scoring.” Said Shoulberg on the overtime winner. The Minutemen are climbing the ranks of the division now at even .500, have a big divisional matchup against Chatham, and will try to get their first divisional victory against the Cougars.
