Delbarton was named New Jersey’s No. 1 wrestling team, and the Green Wave dominated Big State Sports’ wrestling All-Area team.
No less than nine Delbarton wrestlers were chosen to the first team, including state champions Cameron Sontz (106), Ryan DeGeorge (126), Alessio Perentin (165), and Vin Lee (215).
Here is the All-Area team.
Cameron Sontz (Delbarton), 106 – Sontz (39-4) majored Southern Regional’s Anthony Mason to win the state championship, 9-1. He also beat CBA’s Killian Coluccio in the semifinals, 10-3, and tecked Shawnee’s Jordan Segal in the quarters, 16-1 (5:02).
Tyeler Hagensen (Mount Olive), 113 – Hegensen was crowned the Marauders first state champion since Anthony Guidi (1988) when he beat St. Joseph-Montvale’s Johnathon McGinty in the finals, 5-2. Hagensen beat CBA’s Paul Kenny in the state semifinals, 4-3, and knocked off St. John Vianney’s Matthew Gould in the quarters, 3-1
Nick DiFrancescantonio (Hanover Park), 120 – DiFrancescantonio (36-8) won three matches at the state tournament and placed in the Top 12 in New Jersey. He beat Warren Hills’ Charlie Piccione in the wrestlebacks, 7-5, and majored Highland/Triton’s Owen Kulb, 11-1, before losing in the blood round to St. Joseph-Montvale’s Mikey Bautista by fall in 51 seconds.
Ryan DeGeorge (Delbarton), 126 – DeGeorge (38-5) beat Leonia-Palisades Park’s Seach Hibler, 5-2, to win the state championship in Atlantic City. DeGeorge beat Pope John’s Dalton Weber in the semifinals, 7-2, and majored Donovan Catholic’s Sawyer Ostroff in the quarters, 80.
Carson Walsh (Pope John), 132 – Walsh (38-4) reached the state finals at Boardwalk Hall before losing to St. Joseph-Montvale’s Adrian DeJesus, 8-4. Walsh beat Southern Regional’s Bryce Manera in the semifinals, 3-2, and knocked off Delbaerton’s Chase Quenault in the quarters, 5-3.
Jayden James (Delbarton), 138 – James (37-1) reached the state finals in Atlantic City before he lost to St. Peter’s Prep’s Caedyn Ricciardi, 5-2. James beat Paramus Catholic’s Dylan Ross in the semifinals, 4-0, and beat St. Joseph-Montvale’s Donny Almeyda in the quarters, 8-3.
Jack Myers (Morristown), 144 – Myers (42-5) beat Wall’s Donovan DiStefano to place fifth in the state. Myers lost in the state quarterfinals but then beat Jackson Memorial’s Cael Huxford, 8-2, and then Bernards’ Nick Villani, 7-4, before losing in the wrestleback semifinals to Southern’s Wyatt Stout.
Gabe Logan (Delbarton), 150 – Logan (35-5) won three wrestleback rounds and wound up placing fourth in the state. He beat Camden Catholic’s Austin Craft in the wrestlebacks, 12-7, Delsea’s Jamar Dixon, 4-3, and Bergen Catholic’s Jayden Iznaga, 3-2, before losing in the match for third place to Delran’s Drew Roskos.
Carl Betz (Delbarton), 157 – Betz won two matches in the winner’s bracket at the state tournament but then lost twice and wound up placing in the Top 12 in New Jersey. He majored Morris Hills’ Roger Barrezueta in the first round, 15-1, and then majored Gateway/Woodbury’s Andres Cortes, 9-1, before losing to eventual state finalist Kage Jones of Camden Catholic (fall in 1:52) in the winner’s bracket before losing to Voorhees’ Logan Wiecoreck in the wrestlebacks, 4-3.
Alessio Perentin (Delbarton), 165 – Perentin (39-2) repeated as a state champion when he beat Cranford’s Jordan Chapman in the finals, 12-7. Perentin beat Paramus Catholic’s John Quinonez in the state semifinals, 4-1, and pinned Livingston’s Cristian Gioia in the quarterfinals in 3:34.
Louis Cerchio (Delbarton), 175 – Cerchio, a 2023 state champion, took second this time after losing a 6-4 decision to St. Joseph-Montvale’s Ryan Burton. Cerchio tecked Hunterdon Central’s Thomas Brunetti in the semifinals, 21-6 (5:46) and pinned Colonia’s Michael Feliciano in the quarterfinals in 3:49.
Vincenzo LaValle (Hanover Park), 190 – LaValle, third the last two years, took second after losing in the state finals to Brick Memorial’s Harvey Ludington, 11-3. LaValle avenged a Morris County Tournament finals loss to Mount Olive’s Tyler Bienus in the state semifinals, 4-2, and beat Holmdel’s Alexander Reyes in the quarterfinals by technical fall,20-5 (3:49).
Vin Lee (Delbarton), 215 – Lee took down Rumson’s defending state champion Hudson Skove nine seconds into overtime in the state finals to win the state championship, 3-1. Lee pinned Northern Highlands’ Ethan Mendel in the state semifinals in 2:49 and beat Don Bosco’s Dante DeLuca in the quarters, 4-2.
Connor Martin (Delbarton) 285 – Martin took second in the state after getting pinned in the finals by St. Joseph-Montvale’s Rocci Dellagatta in 4:25. Martin pinned Nutley’s Brandon Toranzo in the semifinals in 54 seconds and decked Bergen Catholic’s Benjamin Shue in the quarters in 1:02.
