The Highlanders battled their way to the finish line, securing a much-needed win against a winless Brearley squad. Steals and turnovers consumed the game, particularly problematic for Governor Livingston as Brearley put on a defensive clinic, often converting those turnovers into transition buckets. However, in the end, the Highlanders’ offense proved too overwhelming for the Beavers to contain, who just can’t catch a break in what has been a tough season.
Despite a lackluster first half, the Highlanders found their rhythm as they connected from beyond the arc all night, while also capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and fast breaks. Key contributions from junior Dominic Labisi, who recorded 17 points, sophomore James Caminzarro, and freshman Parker Chatfield, and others helped propel the Highlanders to victory in a game that easily could’ve slipped away from them.
Despite their disappointing record, Brearley, led by head coach Brian Cunado, put together their surefire best performance of the season, showcasing their ability to force turnovers and score in transition with scrappy, tenacious defense. Currently in last place in the UCC, the Beavers of the Valley Division will have a week off before facing Roselle Park, hoping to secure their first win of the season.
Governor Livingston still has some polishing to do when it comes to taking care of the ball but they showed potential to make a late-season push leading up to the NJSIAA Tournament. Following their narrow victory, the Highlanders, who have also been struggling this season, now sit at 4-9, with all of their wins coming within the Valley division. They are currently 3rd place in the division and 17th in the UCC. Led by head coach, Joe Blauner, the Highlanders’ next matchup also comes against Roselle Park on January 28th at home.
