MOUNTAIN LAKES – Mountain Lakes High School’s Joey DiPompeo, who has become a crowd favorite at Lakers home wrestling matches, took his act on the road Saturday.

This time, he more than lived up to the cheers.

The 215-pound sophomore, who usually weighs in in the mid 180’s, scored three pins as coach Matt Stanzione’s team came away with two victories.

Mountain Lakes beat Parsippany (42-32) and host Cresskill (42-40) but lost to Elmwood Park (47-32).

DiPompeo’s pin against Ron Gal in 2:41 was critical in the Lakers victory over Cresskill. Mountain Lakes was nursing a 30-28 lead with four weights left but DiPompeo’s pin increased his team’s lead to 36-28 with just three weights remaining.M

Mountain Lakes’ Noah Jalallar (106) sealed the win with a pin over Cresskill’s Hugo Tsurushima in 1:55 to make it 42-34, icing the match.

“Joey DiPompeo keeps finding ways to get big pins for us to win matches,” Stanzione said. “He did it twice (Saturday) and has been doing it all season. He is absolutely a fan favorite.”

Mountain Lakes and Cresskill battled to a 7-7 split, but the Lakers were able to win because Laker 190-pounder Sebastian Borie was able to stay off his back in a 15-5 major decision loss to Cresskill’s Jimmy Skonier.

In the victory over Parsippany, DiPompeo stepped up again with a fall in 215 against Ryan Stitou in 2:20 to give the Lakers a 36-30 lead.

“Joey is a great kid,” Stanzione said. “He wrestled for our Junior Laker program and has come such a long way. He has overcome obstacles such as his hearing impairment. He shows so much grit and determination. He is also a polite, responsible and tough young man. It proves that anyone can have success as long as you put your mind to it and don’t let anything stand in your way.”

After Mountain Lakes’ Dustin Gabriel stayed off his back in a 7-0 loss to Parsippany’s Mustafa Abdelhamed at 285, Jalallar clinched it with a pin over Simon Kattappurath.

Mountain Lakes saw four wrestlers go 3-0 on the day.

Jalallar had a huge day with two bout-clinching wins as well as a 17-1 technical fall victory over Elmwood Park’s Logan Biziak (5:00).

At 120, Zach Sportelli won by forfeit over Cresskill, pinned Parsippany’s Daniel Nguyen in 1:28 and decisioned Elmwood Park’s Joseph Paretti, 4-2.

Mountain Lakes’ Alessandro Salerno (165) pinned Parsippany’s Jahn Schnetzer in 3:37, decked Cresskill’s Ben Cardoza in 1:06, and pinned Elmwood Park’s Lucas Mora in 3:04.

Rinaldo DiGiacopo (175), meanwhile, flattened Bryan Mata in 28 seconds, won by forfeit over Cresskill, and stuck Elmwood Park’s Reybin Tejada in 39 seconds.
